Purpose
The Covenant Baptist Church exists for the purpose of glorifying our God with specific reference to the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). The Great Commandment challenges us to love God and our fellowman. The Great Commission challenges us to evangelism, bringing people into right relationship with the Son of God; to covenant community, bringing people into a right relationship with the church of God; and to discipleship, bringing people into a right relationship with the Word of God.
Eldership and Affiliation
The Covenant Baptist Church shares a common Eldership with the Baptist Circuit of Churches of the East Caribbean Baptist Mission, of which it is a member congregation. The elders are Pastor Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas (Presiding), Pastor Ivor J. Walker, and Pastor Orvin D.E. Paige. The Covenant Baptist Church is historically Southern Baptist in faith and practice.
History
On Easter Sunday, 2004, the ECBM, under the leadership of Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas, constituted the Covenant Baptist Church. This move was initially motivated by a desire to reconstitute a disbanded Baptist Church in the Cedar Grove community. Nine members formed the charter membership of the Church, transferring their membership from the Central and Tyrells Baptist Churches.
Pastor Orvin D. E. Paige was appointed as Resident Elder of the new congregation. The church was briefly relocated to rented facilities in the Coolidge area. By the providence of God, the ECBM was able to purchase property in the Longfords Estate/Mount Pleasant community on Friars Hill road for the construction of a permanent facility for the Covenant Baptist Church. The Church building was dedicated on April 15, 2007.
Location
Travel north from St. John’s on Friar’s Hill Road. Continue past Dunbar's Estate. Look for the church sign on the right, just before the Cuban Embassy.
